My body still ached, but I knew it would subside. Right now I had to focus on the case files. There had to be a link! One thing I couldn’t figure out was why I was doing this. Why was I trying to justify the actions of a killer? Perhaps because I was seeking justification for the people I’d killed; sure they’d been rogue Entwined, but they were people too, once. I was, once. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t resent my entwining , especially because it was my brother, but it was nothing like a regular life. “Dec, do me a favour would ya?” I snapped to my senses. Apparently I’d been dozing. “Line up the pictures a minute.” I wasn’t sure what Shane was aiming for, but he seemed certain. We poured over the images and almost simultaneously both shouted “There!” It wasn’t much, but just below their necklines, slightly below their collarbones, some kind of smudge. It was barely noticeable, no more than a bruise, but the fact that they all had it, in the same place. That was more than a coincidence.
It took a few minutes to scan the images and zoom onto the mark. It took a few minutes more to clean up and sharpen the focus of the image so that I could make out what the mark was. It looked like a honeycomb pattern; some of the bodies had larger ones than others, but it was the same pattern. I didn’t know quite how to react to this. These markings indicated the early stages of spirit binding degradation. All of these victims, they were Entwined too, and they were rogue...
Back at the morgue, I’d already phoned ahead to tell Eddie what we’d discovered and had him pull out the latest body. When I’d got there, he already had close up pictures of the same honeycomb pattern. Another rogue. Just who was this faceless killer? If all of his targets were rogues, then, was he just like me, a hunter? But what about his own mutation? Mutation only tended to manifest after a broken spirit bond and was a later sign of degradation. A rogue, hunting other rogues perhaps? One thing I was certain about. I had to find him before he took another life, rogue or otherwise...
So that's today's. Definitely gonna have this wrapped up by Friday I reckon. Enjoy!
